Mabote, Sotho for "small strong river", is located on the Southern Ravine of the farm, Groothoek, approximately 64km West from Potgietersrus. Mabote opened in 1998 and is run by the Peens family. The camp is beautifully sited along the river and overlooks a vast rock face.

Dam At Mabote

Mabote is positioned close to the town of Mokopane (Potgietersrus) and is around three and a half hours driving from Johannesburg, and two and a half hours from the Zambesi Intersection (Pretoria/Tswane). The camp lies in a malaria-free unspoiled landscape and nestles in the shadows of the grandiose Waterberg Mountains, with spectacular scenery, rich vegetation and unspoilt ravines.

The Main Camp comfortably accommodates twelve guests in three separate huts, each of them with ample space for four guests. Although this camp is ideal for larger groups, the huts can also be booked separately by smaller groups or families. This camp also contains two fully equipped kitchens with gas burners and refrigerators. Each hut has its own boma for evenings around the barbeque or traditional "potjie". The camp further boasts a deck with an exquisite view of the river as well as clean and comfortable ablution facilities with two hot water showers and three modern flush toilets. Self catering.

The Koko Chalet provides room for six guests. A comfortable king size bed in the main bedroom provides comfort and privacy, while the second bedroom has two single beds and a bunker bed for extra guests or children. Both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, hot water showers, basins and flush toilets. The fully equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, gas burner, kitchen counter and bar stools. The large fire place lends itself perfectly to lazy evenings around the glowing coals and guests are more than welcome to use it for "indoor" barbeques. The chalet also has its own boma as well as a large open deck with a lovely view of the river and awe-inspiring sandstone cliffs. Although there is no electricity, the Koko Chalet has battery operated lights. This is a self-catering facility as well.

The Berg Camp is the perfect place for those who want to get even closer to nature, offering extravagant views of the adjacent areas. Guests have a choice of ten different campsites – the one more beautiful than the other! Guests must please bring their own tents and/or caravans, firewood, dish washing soap, dish cloth and other necessities. A boma provides space for an outdoor braai and work surfaces, sinks, ablution facilities with two hot water showers and two flush toilets provides extra comfort for our guests. The dam is a nice walk from the camp [ about 700m ] This is a self-catering facility.

Walking trails to waterfalls – please note that moderate fitness is required!

Angling and canoeing – canoes and life-jackets are provided while fishing gear and bait are not. Please note that all water activities are dependant on the rain season

Bird watching

4x4 route – We provide the map and guests drive in their own time. A R200 fee is charged for vehicle recovery however.

At Mabote our commitment is to make sure that you experience comfort, nature and exclusivity! We want you to enjoy the feel, tranquillity, sights and sounds of this magnificent area. Below are a few general points to remember when visiting us:

Arrival time: Any time after 14h00 daily

Departure: Flexible

Fishing: Strictly catch and release.

There is no electricity and limited cell phone reception is available.

Firewood is provided in the Main Camp and Koko Chalet but not at the Berg Camp

Workers sweep, make beds and do dishes on a daily basis and light the lanterns at night. [ excl. Koko Chalet ]

No day visitors

No credit card facilities are available

All guests must report at reception before going to the camps.

The nearest petrol/diesel station, hospital, shops or doctors are located in the town Potgietersrus, 64 kilometres away from Mabote – Please be sure to bring everything you need!

PET POLICY:

Pets are welcome at your own risk

Pets are not allowed on the furniture

Bring your pet's own bed/chair/mattress

Bring towels to dry your pet after swimming.

Bring a "poopscoop" - it is the pet owner's responsibility to keep the accommodation areas clean - this is not included in our "fully serviced " policy

Large and or aggressive dogs must be on a leash when the facilities are serviced. Please note that if your dogs show aggressive behaviour towards the workers the facilities will not be serviced

Basic consideration towards other guests with or without pets will be appreciated.

How to get to us:

Take the N1 North to Polokwane/Pietersburg. Go through the MIDDLE of the Kranskop Toll Plaza

From here you have to options:

Option 1:

Turn off at the Naboomspruit / Mookgaphong Road (Off-Ramp 289). [ 30km past Kranskop ] go through Naboomspruit. Drive another 30km and then turn left on the Sterkrivier Road. Travel for 40 km on tarred road and 6km on gravel road (Be sure to drive slow and take care on the gravel road) – You will find the Mabote Gate on your left hand side – From here it is around 5km to Reception

Option 2:

Keep on the N1 until you get to the Nyl Plaza - Go through the small gate on the left -turn left directly after the toll gate to Potgietersrus and left again after about one kilometer at the T-junction - After 6 km turn into the Sterk River Road on your right. Please be on the look-out for this marker as it is not very visible. Travel for 40 km on tarred road and 6km on gravel road (Be sure to drive slow and take care on the gravel road) – You will find the Mabote Gate on your left hand side – From here it is around 5km to Reception
